Our end of year group photo!!
**To be posted: Materials from our work on infinity and Pascal's Triangle
3/27: More proofs by induction
3/20: Proof by Induction
3/6: The Pigeonhole Principle
These are the problems we worked on.
Here are my solutions.
2/13: Links
This is the Numberphile video we watched on the Borromean rings.
We experimented with finding a 3-component Brunnian link that is not the Borromean rings.
We also tried to find a 4-component Brunnian link.
1/23, 1/30, 2/6: Knots
We worked on this.
This is the video we watched on a fast (?) way to tie shoelaces!
1/9: Math Games
We played SET and Prime Climb. You can play SET online here if you're interested!
12/19: RELAYS!!!
We did our first relay*!! These were the problems we used. They were primarily taken from the Guardian's "Monday Math Puzzles" (Alex Bellos) and mathigon.org. The Rudolph question was taken from GCHQ's Christmas Challenge 2022.
*Shout out to Group 1 for their performance of "I Want It That Way".
12/12: Intro to Modular Arithmetic
We wrapped up our discussion on groups from last week:
We read this blurb from Keith Conrad about why groups are important.
We watched this video about how group theory is related to Rubik's cubes and music
12/5: Symmetries of the Square
A picture of the table that E put up on the board for us:
11/28: Things We Take For Granted
You asked me how to prove the quadratic formula last week...so you get to do it for yourself this week!
+ some proofs of basic algebra laws from the field axioms.
11/21 : Coloring Problems
You can find all problems and solutions here.
11/14: A Mathematical Investigation of Spot It!
This is a written explanation of what we worked on.
This is the video we watched. Here is another great video that's more in-depth if you're interested in learning more.
11/7: An Intro to the Math of Voting
See here for more explanations on the material we covered and solutions to the problems we worked on.
10/31: Welcome and the Handshake Problem
